A Short History of KSM Because of the ongoing Indo-German collaboration and relationship and
international exchange of students there were always a few Indians in
Bavaria. Since Germany, after the second world war with the financial
help of foreign investors, grew economically rather quickly and this
created a need for employees in every field especially in the field of
medicine was enormous. They could not afford with the capacity they had
in their country. It was then the reason why the Germans tried to come
to India to recruit Indian nurses or better Indians, especially
Keralites began to fill up the Job availability in Germany in the
medical field.
Around 1969, as Kerala Samajam was started we had many university students, nurses and Malayalee sisters of different congregations in Munich city. It was under the leadership of Dr. Mathew Mandapathil the first Kerala Samajam get together was organised. All the participants found the need of such get together and agreed to meet at least three times a year to celebrate feasts like Easter, Onam and X'mas. During the initial years the Malayalee community in Munich was active and strong. Then as the students finished their studies and left Munich the number of the Keralites in Munich sank to a minimum in the eighties. But still the good old tradition of gathering together for Easter, Onam and X'mas continued to exist. In the following years the Samajam had to accept an Indo-German touch because on the one side there were only a few Indian families here in Munich and secondly the Malaylees who married Germans brought their Partners also to the Samjam meeting. All these years the meeting took place in Johannes-kolleg where formerly the students used to live. From the year of 1990 onwards Kerala Samajam got a the new meeting place in the catholic church, St. Bonifazius, Haar. In all these years one person was elected for two years term as president. All of them have done their level best for smooth running of the Samajam. On the 26th of May, 2002 the Kerala Samajam became an officially registered association (eingetragener Verein). It was the earning of the officials under the leadership of Mr. Johnson Chalissery. They dared to register the Kerala Samajam. The goals of the Samajam are to experience the cultural heritage of India and participate in groups in all the possible fields of life through activities and commitments which has the malabarian touch. In February, 2006 the new team as officials elected. The new team has the mission to develop the Samajam to such an extent possible so that the Keralites and friends can profit maximum from it. For the Service of the Kerala Samajam e.V. the elected officials are:
